Fruity southern Rhône from high-altitude vineyards. Lovely balance, full-flavoured yet not heavy, with a touch of spice. The blend is half grenache with syrah and 10% each of carignan and viognier.

Domaine de Saint Amant

This is a family estate located high up in the Dentelles de Montmirail above the pretty village of Suzette. The countryside is nothing short of breathtaking with views over the mountains and the valley far below.

Curiously for an estate located within the Beaumes de Venise appellation, there is not a berry of muscat. Instead most of the production is red with the white coming from viognier with a little roussanne.

Beaumes de Venise is famous for its sweet wine, but this family estate located high in the Dentelles de Montmirail in the southern Rhône produces mainly dry red. This is a new listing, a blend of 50% Grenache with 30% Syrah and 10% each of Carignan and Viognier. It's gorgeous – generous and yet fresh, with dark fruit, some savoury meatiness, and a hint of iodine. The oak influence is restrained, from 10 months age in 30-year-old oak vats. Great value and drinking beautifully. 93/100
