Willi Haag
The Haag family has been based in the village of Brauneberg since 1500. Brauneberg’s sheer south-east-facing slope has been famous since Roman times – indeed, until the beginning of the last century, the town was known as Dusemond (from the Latin mons dulcis, meaning ‘sweet mountain’) and its wines were the most highly prized of all the Mosel.
The steep angle of the slope is incredibly hard to work, and Marcus Haag who is currently in control of the estate says his modest six hectares are quite enough! In addition to plots in the prestigious Brauneberger Juffer and Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr vineyard sites, the Haags also have vines in Valdenz on the opposite bank, once the cooler position but delivering increasingly high quality as a result of climate change. Marcus focuses solely on the riesling grape which is perfectly suited to Brauneberg’s steep slate-soil vineyards. The wines are typically fully of flavour with generous flowery bouquet and flavour.
The family’s winemaking estate was founded by Willi Haag, and it is his grandson Marcus who is currently in control, having taken over the company in 1995 when his father died.
