Cahors, Château Haut-Monplaisir 2019

Red Wine from France - SW France (excl. Bordeaux)
0 star rating 0 Reviews
Made in collaboration with Jean Verhaeghe of Château du Cèdre, the Prestige is a selection of some of the estate's best vines, with 30 days of maceration, and aged for 2 years in 500L barrels. Plenty of clean, plummy fruit and a lovely balance here.

Château Haut-Monplaisir

This 30-hectare property at La Capelle-Cabanac in the Lot is owned by Cathy Fournier and her husband Daniel, who took over from Cathy’s father in 1998. She decided to make a change by bottling her own wines rather than selling them to négociants, as her father had done. Being highly quality-conscious the Fourniers asked for technical help from Pascal and Jean-Marc Verhaeghe of one of Cahors’ most celebrated properties, Château du Cèdre.

Another change was the conversion to organic farming, for which they are now certified, together with cutting yields and sorting the grapes by hand when they reach the cellars. There the grapes undergoes a long maceration and very gentle extraction to emphasise the purity of the fruity, employing micro-oxygenation to soften malbec’s inherent tannins, and ageing in both tank and some oak barrels before the wine is bottled unfiltered.

The focus is entirely on the malbec grape here across the three cuvées they make, and all are unblended.
