Château Haut-Batailley, Pauillac 2014

Red Wine from France - Bordeaux
0 star rating 0 Reviews
François-Xavier Borie, owners in 2014, made a delicious wine in that vintage. A lovely Pauillac, supremely elegant with great purity of expression and fine length. 78% cabernet sauvignon, 22% merlot, with 60% new oak employed.

Château Haut-Batailley

Haut-Batailley was originally part of the same estate as Château Batailley, but was divided from it in the 1940s and became the property of Francoise des Brest-Borie (the sister of the talented winemaker Jean-Eugène Borie, of Ducru-Beaucaillou). She asked him to run it for her, which he duly did, and after his death in 1998 his son, Francois-Xavier Borie, took over and ran the property alongside another of the Borie family’s properties, Grand-Puy-Lacoste. In spring 2017 the property was bought by the Cazes family, owners of Château Lynch Bages.

This fifth growth property is located towards the south of the Pauillac region, where the climate is more akin to that of the Haut-Médoc, with a moderating influence from the Gironde. There are 22 hectares of vines in total with an average age of 35 years.

Generally, Haut-Batailley is a more elegant and gentle Pauillac than Batailley, with the accent on fruit and charm, but in some years (like 2009 and 1962) it shows its real weight, with Pauillac flavour and power.

The blend tends to be 70% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot and 5% cabernet franc, with up to 20 months spent in oak; however Francois-Xavier adapts the style well to the vintage. Haut-Batailley will age well for between five and 20 years.
