Château Raymond-Lafon

This estate gets its name from its 19th century founder. Since 1972 it has been in the Meslier family – initially Pierre Meslier, who was for many years general manager at Yquem, and who applied the same rigorous standards to Raymond-Lafon from the outset. In recent years he and his wife have passed control to their children, Marie-Françoise, Jean-Pierre and Charles-Henri, the latter of which manages the vineyards and the winery.

The 16 hectares of vines mostly surround the château, and are planted on clay-gravel soils. Grapes are harvested one by one, ensuring only those with the right level of noble rot are selected, in between three and 10 successive pickings.

The blend is generally 80% semillon and 20% sauvignon, which spends three years in barrels, 80-100% of them new. It can age for between five and 25 years.

The only problem used to be that price was rather high, but in recent years the quality has been excellent and the price more reasonable.
