Chianti, Cerro del Masso 2020
Alberto Antonini is a globetrotting consultant winemaker, but makes this sangiovese for us at his own winery, Poggiotondo. Redcurrant and cranberry-scented with a touch of spice and leather on the finely grained palate, it's a medium-bodied refreshing Chianti that will be wonderful with salami or good pizza.

Poggiotondo
The Poggiotondo estate is the family property of renowned consultant oenologist Alberto Antonini, situated in the hills to the north-west of Empoli in Tuscany. Bought by his father in 1968 (the estate had previously belonged to the noble family of the Guidi who had lived there for centuries) embraces vines grown on south and south-west facing slopes enjoying excellent exposure to the Tuscan sun.
Alberto and his wife Allesandra live and work there with their three children, farming the 28 hectares of vines organically (they were certified so in 2014) and with a desire to honour the traditions of Tuscan winemaking, making wines that express the ancient marine soils here that have been regenerated by their approach. He has replaced stainless-steel fermentation tanks with concrete ones, and ageing in large untoasted barrels rather than the smaller barrels that impart their flavour to the wine more assertively.
The grape varieties he employs in his Chianti wines are the traditional ones too, sangiovese, canaiolo, colorino and a little of the white grape trebbiano in some cases. In the cellar he eschews the use of any additives other than a little sulphur so that what he finds in the vineyards are expressed in the bottle.
