Chile Small Wonders Case
Wines included
The Society's Exhibition Alto Maipo Cabernet Sauvignon 2021
2021 was an excellent vintage for the Alto Maipo which produces wines that are fine, firm and linear in style. This wine is from Pirque in Chile, a commune that offers great elegance and length of flavour. Ageing in barrel for about 17 months has developed exquisite cedary aromas and silky tannins.
Undurraga TH Limarí Chardonnay 2022
Bright, taut, mineral, lemon-scented chardonnay fermented in concrete eggs and some French oak barriques to avoid masking the subtle aromas with oak. Decant this linear, long-flavoured ‘less is more' style wine, and serve at 12-13°C.
Villard Le Chardonnay Grand Vin Casablanca 2022
From the cool Casablanca Valley, planted on sandy loam soils, this is fresh and fine barrel fermented chardonnay with intense aromas of apple and white peach with a light scent of vanilla. Matured for 10 months in new, second and third-use barrels to moderate the oak aromas and let the wine aromas shine through.
Villard Le Pinot Noir Grand Vin Casablanca 2022
Pure, black-cherry scented Chilean pinot with a fine, fresh silky palate. Matured in 83% small 5,000-litre foudres and 17% 300-litre barrels. This allows the tannins to soften while preserving the fruit and avoiding marking it with oak.
Tabalí Barranco Río Hurtado Limarí Viognier 2023
From a newish vineyard planted at a remarkable 1,600m altitude in the eastern side of the Limarí Valley in the foothills of the Chilean Andes. Enjoy its apricotty nose and full-yet-fresh-tasting palate.
Koyle Cerro Basalto Cuartel G2 Carmenère 2021
This is one of Chile's best carmenères. Made from a coolish hillside site for this variety to emphasise the plum and cedar aspects and avoid jamminess. This is ripe and powerful but also fresh and balanced. Matured 18 months in barrel to develop aromas and complexity.
