Christmas 2021 Small Wonders reds case
From the superlative 2010 vintage, this is a perfectly ready-for-drinking blend of 68% cabernet sauvignon and 32% merlot. With deep colour and an appealing cedar and leather bouquet, the wine has lovely balance, despite the heat of the vintage. Smooth, satisfying claret.
The Molozay's pioneering estate lies amidst an almost forgotten vineyard in the Moselle Valley near Metz in north-east France, previously decimated by phylloxera and war. Biodynamics are employed – for the environment, and the wines – producing a deep-coloured pinot with cherry and blackberry fruit and gentle tannins.
A rare beast indeed: a pinot noir from California that’ll steal the show without breaking the bank. Juicy red berry-scented pinot, with bright forward fruit flavours, soft integrated tannins and a succulent black cherry finish.
Ripasso styles can really offer the best of both worlds, retaining freshness and cherry fruit from the corvina grape, but gaining a little more depth, weight and complexity from the Amarone grape skins that the wine has been 'passed over', creating an Italian red of persistent flavour.
Delicious winter drinking from one of our members’ favourite Argentine reds. A blend of 40% malbec, 35% cabernet sauvignon and 25% merlot, this was matured for a year in large old foudres and six months in concrete until the bright fruit flavours have been transformed to gentle, mellow notes of cedar, leather and tobacco.
Robust but velvety big brother to the Al-Ria red, from the warm south of Portugal, which blends local touriga nacional (fragrant black fruits) with ripe, peppery syrah, all rounded off by 12 months in French and sweeter American oak barrels.
