Nero d'Avola retains great freshness despite the long Sicilian summer days. This juicy red has a soft, full mouthfeel with cherry and plum flavours.

The syrah component is showing its hand more in the new vintage of this South African blend, with ripe blue fruits lifted by the refreshing red-fruit profile of cinsault.

From the fairly newly designated appellation Wine of Origin Cape Town, fanned by cooling breezes which bring freshness to the dark fruits and spice in this Cape Blend comprising 30% of the essential pinotage, with 32% merlot and 38% cabernet sauvignon.

A superb example of affordable and generous McLaren Vale shiraz. This Australian red offers lovely ripe juicy red fruit on the nose, with bramble and violets. The palate is full-bodied but fresh, with a silky texture and spice.

Ollieux-Romanis is a large estate in Corbières with over a century of growing the red-fleshed grape Alicante Bouschet. They use it in many of their red wines, such as the Society’s Corbières, though never more than one or two percent. In generous years they sometimes make a blend of carignan and Alicante which works well. But buyer Marcel Orford-Williams liked the idea of a pure Alicante and is thrilled by the result. Obviously very deep purple colour, fragrant with plum very evident. Tannins are soft and the finish fruity with maybe a hint of spice. It can be enjoyed cellar cool or even lightly chilled, perfect with a barbecue but best kept away from a white tablecloth!
