Ogier, Cave des Papes

The Ogier family were apricot growers at a time when apricots were worth more than grapes. Grapes or apricots? Michel Ogier wisely chose to concentrate on grapes and his son Stéphane now makes some of the finest wines in the Côte-Rôtie appellation where the accent is on elegance and refinement. Stéphane Ogier is a well-travelled winemaker with two vintages at Stellenbosch under his belt and enough ideas to fill a lifetime. The Ogiers also make very good vin de pays under the La Rosine label, based on syrah and viognier from an unclassified vineyard between Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu. The approach here is all about respect for each appellation, and even each terroir, with new oak for the regular Côte-Rôtie as well as for limited-release special bottlings.
