Domaine de Villargeau

Domaine de Villargeau is situated in the little-known appellation of Coteaux du Giennois, north of Pouilly-sur-Loire. It is run by the Thibault family who have made great strides towards raising quality and a greater awareness of the appellation. The soils here are, for the most part, flint, and the majority of vines are sauvignon blanc for whites, with smaller amounts of pinot noir and gamay for the reds and rosés.

The vineyards are now certified organic. Vines are forced to dig deep for nutrients, thanks to the planting of grass between rows. Yields are controlled through systematic thinning of bunches of grapes.

The whites are regular favourites at our Loire tastings and continue to grow in popularity. Crisp and fresh with definite flinty characters, they closely resemble those of nearby Pouilly-Fumé but at much more attractive prices.

Loire Vintage 2019

et another exceptional vintage! Perhaps these atypical years are the vintages of the future? 2019 was another year of extremes and nail biting, with temperatures even in the Loire Atlantique nudging 40C more than once last summer. With so little rain, there were concerns over whether the fruit would actually ripen, but sure enough, some rain did arrive: a little in mid-August, a little more in early to mid-September, depending on the location, refreshing the vines and allowing them to ripen their healthy fruit in fine conditions.

There will be some great reds, with the chance to keep some in store for the future. Whites are ripe and healthy, with, remarkably, a little more freshness than the 2018s, so it will be a great year to explore the length of the Loire.
