Domaine Clos Romane
This estate, run by husband-and-wife team Stéphane and Nadine Charancon, was only formed in 2011. Stéphane’s family has farmed in Cairanne for four generations, but until 2010 he had been selling his grapes to the local co-op, of which he was vice-president. Clos Romane was founded when he and Nadine decided to combine their love of wine and the land and create their own estate.
The couple now has 30 hectares of vines, some of which are over 50 years old, planted on clay and limestone soils which range from the terraces of the Aygues River right up into the mountains.
Stéphane and Nadine make both a Côtes-du-Rhône and a Cairanne. The Cairanne is an interesting blend: only 50% is grenache, which is much less than usual, and the 25% syrah is joined by 25% mourvedre. The wine is vinified in concrete tanks, where it spends 10 months ageing too, after which it spends 12 to 18 months in oak.
Clos Romane labels depict a Roman coin, dating back to 150BC, which Stéphane found in the vineyard.
