Domaine De Mourchon
The Domaine de Mourchon is the ‘retirement’ home of Walter McKinley and his wife Ronnie, though the word retirement seems utterly inappropriate when you see the work that has gone in to the establishment and success of this domaine. Walter and Ronnie bought the property in 1998 having sold his information technology, taking on 17 hectares of vines in a beautiful spot but without a house or winery. It was, they admit, a ‘coup de couer’. Convinced of the high-quality of the terroir in the Dentilles de Montmirail below the slopes of Mont Ventoux and armed with huge enthusiasm they had built a state-of-the-art gravity-flow winery by the end of the following year. Two years later winemaker Sebastien Magnouac joined the team and with his help the domaine has earned a reputation as one of the foremost in the appellation and in the southern Rhône as a whole, so much so that they had to purchase more vineyard in 2003. They make several cuvées of red Côtes-du-Rhône, a white of the same appellation, a rosé and more recently a Châteauneuf du Pape red for which some of the fruit comes from the famous Le Crau plateau.
