Crystallum 'The Agnes' Chardonnay, Western Cape 2023
A multi-vineyard blend from Hemel-en-Aarde and the Overberg regions that's naturally fermented and aged in a mixture of French oak barrels and foudres for nine months. The nose is shy at first but the palate shows the wine's true potential, with a pithy, mealy richness and lovely mineral freshness. Needs time to unfurl.

Crystallum Wines
A new producer, established in 2006, with 2007 the first vintage release. The winemaker comes from good local stock, however: Peter-Allan Finlayson is the son of Peter Finlayson of Bouchard Finlayson and appears to be something of a chip off the old block when it comes to handling chardonnay and pinot noir.
The vineyards are farmed sustainably, in the charmingly named Crystal Kloof (valley), and the eco-friendly winery is made from straw bales, covered with plaster made from recycled paper and clay.
