Domaine Camp Galhan
Lionel and Alain Pourquier are the owners of this domaine, one which has been in the family since the 1900s. Until recently all the grapes were sold to the local co-operative but when Lionel, who tends the vines and makes the wines, took over the estate from his father he decided that it was time to show what his vineyards could really do. He is now one of only two growers who make wine from their own vines, alongside his asparagus and wheat crops. In 2001 he built a new winery into the side of a hill so that everything could be done by gravity, and therefore more gently, allowing the wines to show off the various terroirs. It all fits with their 'hand off' approach to winemaking. The 40 hectares of vineyards sit fairly high on hillsides above Ribauté les Tavernes on the eastern edge of the Cevennes. The vines grow in arid limestone and clay soils covered with galets (large round stones) that are among the best of the region.
