Domaine Montangeron

This Beaujolais domaine sits in the commune of Fleurie, with 20.5-hectares of vines in that famous cru but also in Morgon, Moulin-à-Vent and Chiroubles. As well as cru wines, they make Beaujolias and Beaujolais-Villages wines. They employ whole bunch semi-carbonic maceration (i.e. some bunches ferment inside the skins while others are crushed), macerating for between 8 and 15 days depending on the wine. Ageing takes place in a mixture of cement and wood. The domaine also holds High Environmental Value certification from the French government, recognising the efforts that have been made here in sustainable farming, conservation and the encouragement of biodiversity.

Mid greyish crimson. Juicy, scented raspberry fruit. Deliciously dry and dusty-fine tannins. Classically scented Fleurie in a lighter vintage but still has notable persistence. Mouth-watering finish....

The Wine Society has an excellent selection of Beaujolais on its list, including this long-time listing from Fleurie. In the warm 2020 vintage it's more generous than in some previous years, but still a delightful glass, with perfumed cherry fruit, supple and juicy. The alcohol is punchy, but it's not out of balance and there is real value here. 89/100

There will not be a finer value Beaujolais released this year. This is my pronouncement after tasting this wine and then looking at the price tag. This is not a long-lived wine style nor a particularly rich or mineral-soaked wine. It is, however, a thrilling drink already, and I almost didn’t spit it out, such was the immense pleasure it gave me. And guess what? I wrote up the 2019 last year, which was a more expensive quid. I would advise you to reserve your case(s) NOW.
