This event occurred in the past

To celebrate the 150th Anniversary our buyer for the Rhône, Marcel Orford-Williams, invited the celebrated house of Chapoutier to help us realise an ultimate project in wine creation which we are delighted to preview and celebrate at this masterclass.

The idea for this project was based on the idea that when The Wine Society was founded, the appellation system of France did not even exist and so it was not uncommon for regions within France to be blended together to produce something more special. Now, with modern technology at our fingertips, we’ve revolutionised this concept and created two blends – one white and one red – from Rhône varietals grown in both France and Australia.

Chapoutier was the clear partner for this innovative project due to their global view of wine. The family is based in Tain l’Hermitage in the Rhône, but they make wine in the Roussillon, Germany and Portugal and have a historical connection with the town of Heathcote in the state of Victoria, famous for its shiraz wines. Like the Society, Maison Chapoutier is keen to innovate and look to the future to create something that has never been done before.

The European Director of Chapoutier, Martin Champagne, will take members on a journey through eight wines, exploring marsanne, viogner and syrah – the varieties used in our two special blends.

Members can expect fine wines from classic regions in the Northern Rhône as well as interesting varietal wines from emerging areas, all under the expert guidance and explanation of Martin. He will then explain the premise and production (including the intricate challenges) of the two one-of-a-kind wines that have taken grapes from Australia and France and blended them together to create these unique wines.

The full list of wines for the tasting will be released w/c 12th August but will include the below:
