Bando de Corvos 'Murder of Crows' Tinto, Lisboa 2023
This wine is sourced from vineyards close to the city of Lisbon and is a blend of native Portuguese grapes, touriga nacional, castelao and trincadeira which come together to create a medium- to full-bodied, generous wine, which is full of Portuguese charm. Juicy aromas of damsons, plums, black pepper and a mellow earthiness on the nose lead to a generous, fruit-driven but mellow palate. Perfect with beef stews and dishes with earthy flavours, or just on its own. A charming, easy-going and inexpensive bottle which demonstrates authentic Portuguese charm. Bando de Corvos (Murder of Crows) takes inspiration from the story of the two crows which accompanied the first King of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, when he brought Saint Vincent's bones to Lisbon. Crows are now a symbol of Lisbon and appear on the city's coat of arms.
The Society's Douro Red 2023
Portugal's Douro Valley is not only one of Europe's most beautiful landscapes but is home to a rich history of grape growing. Historically the region has been famous for its fortified wines, but in the last few decades the increase in production of table wines has been very well received. This wine is a great-value introduction into the excellent quality now being produced from native grape varieties, and captures the generosity, personality and charm of the table wines of the Douro. Produced especially for The Wine Society by Vinhos Invencível, a small winery run by Douro local Rita Marques and South African Marc Kent, of Boekenhoutskloof fame. A blend of mostly old bush-vines, co-planted and co-fermented, this is as wild and unique as the Douro itself. Predominantly touriga franca, touriga nacional and tinta roriz, from vineyards at different altitudes to capture both freshness and concentration of fruit. This is plush and inviting on the nose, with notes of mocha, dark bramble fruits and violets, typical of touriga nacional. The palate has a lovely, full structure, with juicy blueberries, damsons and sloes all joined by a twist of cracked black pepper and a hint of cinnamon on the back palate. There is intensity here, but the wine finishes lifted and fresh, taking all the wild charm of the region and presenting it in an easy-to-drink way.
The Society's Portuguese Red, Península de Setúbal 2024
From family-owned Casa Ermelinda Freitas, south-east of Lisbon, this friendly red combines local castelão, which is all juicy red fruits, with Alicante Bouschet which brings darker black fruit and fleshiness. Casa Ermelinda Freitas is a significant family-owned company established in 1920 and run by successive generations of dynamic women. This is a supple, juicy red to enjoy on its own or with a host of dishes. A good, honest, easy-drinking house red which has proven a real hit with Society Members.
AdegaMãe Pinta Negra, Lisboa 2023
Real value here, with plenty of dark brambly fruit, floral aroma and generous mouthfeel. An easy drinking anytime red from Portugal, made from local aragonez and castelão grapes.
