Cave Co-operative de Rauzan

Cave Co-Operative de Rauzan was formed in 2008 after two nearby co-operatives – one storage facility dating back to 1933 and one co-operative cellar founded in 1936 – merged so they could move forward together.

They now have 3000ha of land farmed by around 300 growers, producing wines under the Bordeaux Superiéur, Bordeaux, Entre-Deux-Mers, and Crémant de Bordeaux appellations. The resultant 450,000hl of wine produced per year makes them the largest producers of ‘wine of controlled origin’ in France, but their large production is by no means incompatible with excellent quality levels.

The vineyards are all found in the heart of the Entre-Deux-Mers region, an area known for its rich history, architecture, and cuisine. At 50km from Saint-Emilion, they are close to the Dordogne and benefit from marlstone soils. Although 83% of the co-op’s production is red wine – specifically, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and cabernet franc – the 17% of white production is still very important to Rauzan’s success, and the semillon, sauvignon blanc, and muscadelle grapes work well with this high-acidity soil.

Château La Perrière is exclusive to The Wine Society in the UK, and we adjust the blend of grapes depending on each vintage. Despite its accessible price, the wine is subject to strict production methods: the date of harvest and the equipment invested in to allow the wine’s low-temperature fermentation and safe resting on its lees are both crucial to Château La Perrière’s consistent quality.
