Forage Supply Co. 'Caveman' Barossa Valley Carignan 2021

3.500000000 star rating 4 Reviews
Deep purple, intense and youthful Australian carignan that feels full of energy. The nose is generous and brooding, with notes of juicy purple fruit and iron, while the palate is packed with ripe blackcurrant, plum, blueberry and spice notes, with full grippy tannins and remarkable freshness. Topping it all off there are baked plum, blackcurrant crumble and cocoa notes on the finish. Any profits Forage make from these wines go towards their work in helping the homeless in South Australia through building housing and getting people back into work.

Amazingly concentrated with a silky structure and impressive persistence. Intriguing expression, with a unique blend of Mediterranean expressions and a grained texture. 95/100

Vibrant, young natural-ish Aussie red brimming with glorious ripe cherry fruit. Part of the profits go to help housing projects.

I LOVED this new Australian listing, sourced by The Society's Australia buyer, Freddy Bulmer. The 'Caveman' name and the region of origin (Barossa) might lead you to expect a monster – this is anything but. Think New World alternative to Beaujolais or dolcetto, a lively unoaked red, deeply inky purple in colour and oozing fresh and juicy ripe black plum and cherry fruit. There's also a hint of demerara sugar. I'd serve this slightly chilled. Totally irresistible. 93/100

From a producer focused on sustainability that commits to helping homeless people near its Adelaide home, a wine that also does the right thing. Carignan can be hard work in the wrong hands, but this one is bursting with energy and verve, juicy purple fruit, plum crumble, a crack of black pepper and a hint of coffee bean, with the alcohol kept on a tight leash at 13.5%. It’s dangerously delicious.
