The Wine Society's Generation Series Argentine Malbec 2022
We had to have an Argentine malbec for our limited-edition, 150th anniversary celebrating Generation Series range, as it so obviously represents a wine style that has risen to prominence in the last 50 years. It comes from the Altamira region whose cool climate and limestone soil produce a wine with floral and black fruit aromas and a ripe palate given length and freshness by the limestone soils. The 2022 vintage was of excellent quality. Maturation in 20% new French oak barrels and 80% second and third use for about eight months moderates oak influence, rounding out the tannins and contributing a hint of vanilla without swamping the fruit flavour. The Wine Society's Generation Series Vinsobres 2021
Altitude and mountain breezes make Vinsobres the ideal place to source a Côtes-du-Rhône, and this example, made for us by our old friends the Jaume family for our 150th anniversary, has bright open fruity notes of cherry and raspberry, ripe tasting but without any heaviness. The Wine Society's Generation Series Rioja 2020
A limited release for our 150th is this fruity, plummy and smooth Rioja which is mostly garnacha, the grape most commonly used in Rioja in the 19th century. This has been aged for several years before bottling in 2023, including 10 months in French oak. For a video message from the winemaker, and for more on the story of this wine, please scroll down.
The Wine Society's Generation Series Corbières-Boutenac 2021
From an estate that has emerged as one of the leaders in fine wine making in the Languedoc, this is a blend using old vines, from 40 to 100 years old, and partly aged in barrels. Fragrant with hints of smoke and black-berried fruit. it is full and rich on the palate with considerable length. Ollieux-Romanis, with whom we have worked for many years, were the natural choice to make our Generation Series Corbières to celebrate our 150th anniversary, having produced our member-favourite Society's Corbières for a long time. The Society's Generation Series Hemispheres Red 2022
Shiraz from Heathcote in Victoria and syrah from the Roussillon and the northern Rhône is skilfully blended by Maxime Chapoutier and his team to tease out the best of both hemispheres. Full-bodied, dark, spicy fruit marries Aussie exuberance with French refinement in a look at the future. As we celebrate our 150th anniversary with another release of Generation Series wine looking at the future, might we see more cross-border blends like this? One of a pair of wines (see The Society's Generation Series Hemispheres White 2023) that are groundbreaking, from the concept via the execution to the way members can buy them as a ‘First Release’. They are two of the most innovative wines in our history. We invited the celebrated house of Chapoutier to help us realise a project in wine creation, blending Rhône varieties from France and Australia to create a wine that makes sense and is delicious and rewarding. Chapoutier were key to the project thanks to their global view of wine and love of testing the boundaries. Based in Tain l’Hermitage in the Rhône, and making wine in the Roussillon, Germany and Portugal, they have a historical connection with the town of Heathcote in the state of Victoria, famous for its shiraz . Had anyone thought of blending syrah from Tain with shiraz from Heathcote? Like The Society, the Chapoutier family are keen to innovate and were immediately taken with the project. Tastings in the Rhône saw the component parts selected and shipped in here in bulk, as recent changes in UK law permit international wines to be blended here and be called ‘wine’. It could be abused to create average-quality wines, but we’re creating a fine wine from one of the world’s greatest producers. The wines will be bottled in lightweight bottles in the UK, showing that this isn’t just the route for cheap blends! Drink 2024 to 2029. 14%
