This Kiwi chardonnay is a ‘bells-and-whistles wine that really overdelivers,’ said buyer Freddy Bulmer at our Wine Champions blind tastings, and at a price to gladden the hearts of Burgundy lovers. Aromas of lemon and apple combine beau fully with toasty oak for an elegant, complex treat good enough to honour the turkey, not to mention seafood or mushroom dishes.

You can find excellent wines made from pretty much any grape variety in the southern hemisphere these days ... These are every bit as distinctive as styles made using the same grape varieties in the French regions where they made their names. The exception to this rule is chardonnay. So many southern hemisphere producers have adopted a Burgundian style (or styles) that I find it harder each year to separate them from the ‘originals’. Grove Mill’s keenly balanced, gently savoury Marlborough chardonnay, for example, could easily pass for a much pricier Burgundian bottling.

An inexpensive Marlborough Chardonnay (93% Wairau, 7% Awatere) aged 11 months in French oak barriques, 15% new. Mealy and almondy, there's a little touch of flintiness to the creamy apple fruit. In the mouth the lightly biscuity oak supports quite clean and lean fruit, certainly more in the apple and citrus spectrum than tropical, with a tight, pithy lemon finish. 88/100

The best sub-£10 Chardonnay to buy now. The Wine Society is unswervingly excellent with its gifted, haggling buying team. Are you a fan of white Burgundy fan but have a distaste for the price? Try this instead. Stunning value, delivering ripe stone fruit, baking spice oak, grilled almond, orchard fruit and citrusy refreshment. As good as wine gets under £10. The length is impeccable, as is the precision of expression. It’s a whizz with roast chicken, fish pie, poached salmon/roast trout with hollandaise and sole meunière. Seriously good wine as selected by the astute buyer, Freddy Bulmer. Hurry though as this Kiwi vinous steal will sell out fast.
