Half bottle of Tio Pepe Fino 'En Rama' (2022 bottling)

Sherry from Spain
4.750000000 star rating 4 Reviews
The 2022 bottling of Tio Pepe’s Fino ‘En Rama’ sherry is pale gold in colour, with a lovely pungent, yeasty nose. On the palate it displays intense notes of freshly baked bread, with an umami savouriness on the finish. A classy and beautifully pure Fino from the legendary Antonio Flores, master blender for Gonzalez Byass.

Gonzalez Byass

Some 180 years after the foundation of the company, Gonzalez Byass is still run by the family that founded it in 1835. Based in Jerez the company owns more than 500 hectares of vineyards and controls almost as much land owned by other growers.

It was only a matter of months after the foundation of the company that exports to Britain began and the United Kingdom remains the main market for their sherries to this day.

Gonzalez Byass bought their first vineyards in 1844, began bottling in Jerez, rather than shipping all their wines in bulk, in 1846 and in 1849 they established one of the most famous sherry brands of all time – Tio Pepe fino. The name means ‘Uncle Pepe’ and the iconic image of the sombrero-wearing, guitar-playing bottle was born in 1935.

Current winemaker Antonio Flores was born and raised at the winery and has been master blender since 1980. His mastery of his craft led to the company winning the Len Evans trophy at the International Wine Challenge in recognition of the consistent quality of their wines over many years.

The Society has stocked the crisp Tio Pepe Fino for many years and has, in recent years, had the pleasure of offering members the Tio Pepe En Rama version, bottled directly from the cask without fining or filtration. This is as close as sherry gets to tasting it straight from the cask and, though it needs drinking up quickly to retain the vivacity of its youth, has proved extremely popular.

Sherry aficionados eagerly await the annual spring release of en rama Sherries, as the category showcases Sherry in its raw, freshly released state, unfined and with minimal filtration, and usually produced in small quantities. Gonzales Byass's regular Tio Pepe fino bottling is a blend of many butts to create a consistent house style, whereas the en rama blends selected butts, chosen to reflect vineyard character. Offering a great aromatic intensity, this is fresh, saline, tangy and crisp, with a deeply yeasty character, and it goes on forever in the mouth. Enjoy it with jamon Iberico – a simple and heavenly pairing! The half-bottle is a great entry point. 93/100

Bottled on 23rd March this year, this epic En Rama won this year’s taste-off against La Gitana’s Manzanilla version by the slimmest of margins. While La Gitana is typically lusty and involving, Tio Pepe’s Fino En Rama is slightly more lifted, a touch fresher and more cleansing on the finish. This is the 13th edition of this unfiltered and unfined Tio Pepe En Rama in the UK, and it was selected from 96 barrels from the Tio Pepe solera. Antonio Flores, the master blender at González Byass, noted that this year’s saca, or selection for bottling, “was clearly influenced by the weather during the growing season. A very mild and extremely dry winter meant that the flor was very active during the colder months.” Flor is the covering of yeast that protects sherries from oxidation, giving them their unique yeasty, salty character. The annual spring selection takes place when the flor is at its thickest, giving the unfiltered and unfined wines their distinctive flavours. My advice is to get in quick to secure your stock of this fantastic style of sherry. Always incredible value for money ... this must be the most seasonal and finest value wine purchase of the moment! 18/20

Most wines don’t follow a particularly strict release schedule. It’s generally a matter of when the wine feels ready to go, which varies greatly according to the producer, the region, and the style they’re looking to make. But there are a few brands and styles that are very much seasonal releases. The most famous of these is without question Beaujolais nouveau, which “arrives” as the old ad slogan has it, on the third Thursday of November each year. Over the past decade or so, however, wine lovers have come to anticipate another seasonal release round about now: en rama sherry. These are dry fino and manzanilla styles that are bottled directly from the barrel, unfiltered and unclarified, in the spring. The idea is that the wines have an extra level of flavour, freshness and depth at this time of the year, an assertion that certainly feels true about the magnificent 2022 release from Tío Pepe, a concentrated essence of salty-sourdough-savouriness.
