Henriques and Henriques
Henriques & Henriques is one of the most famous names on the Portuguese island of Madeira. Founded in 1850 by João Goncalves Henriques, the company has a rich history and a profound knowledge of the art of making Madeira wine. His sons João Joaquim and Francisco Eduardo (whence the name H&H) inherited the running of the business and began to concentrate on shipping their own wines rather than supplying other shippers. In 1968, as they had no heirs, responsibility passed to three friends and partners Peter Cossart, Alberto Nascimento Jardim and Carlos Nunes Pereira. Today it is run by the charismatic Humberto Jardim. They moved out of the capital Funchal in 1984 and into new premises in Camara de Lobos in 1992. Henriques & Henriques is the only producer to have continuously owned its own vineyards, including the largest vineyard on the island, but they continue to work with anything from 400 to 600 growers.
Madeira is very much a wine epitomised by its traditions, which winemaker Luís Pereira captures so well across the range. H&H produces the full range of styles from the drier, crisp Sercial through to intense and deep-coloured Malmsey, with a particular specialism in Verdelho and Terrantez. A limited amount of some rare single vintages, perfect for anniversaries, and colheita wines are also released.
