Hidalgo Pastrana Manzanilla Pasada

Sherry from Spain
4.142860000 star rating 14 Reviews
‘Absolutely brilliant, authentic dry sherry – a wine I’d like to taste every day’ was Sebastian Payne MW’s assessment of this wine, which echoed its Gold-medal International Wine Challenge victory last year, in our 2021 Championship, following it up with a Decanter World Wine Awards silver and International Wine Challenge bronze medal in 2021. Mellow and nutty with a tangy saline palate, capable of standing up to a cornucopia of cuisines.

Hidalgo

Bodegas Hidalgo is one of the few remaining family-run businesses based in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, having been founded in 1792. It specialises in single-solera and single-vineyard bottlings, and crafts excellent manzanilla (the dry, flor-influenced style of sherry that can only be produced and aged in the coastal town of Sanlúcar).

Hidalgo is one of the few bodegas to craft a pasada style, which is essentially an aged manzanilla, of around seven years old, where the veil of flor (which protects the wine against oxidation) has faded, resulting in a manzanilla with a deeper colour and mature flavours.

A very special manzanilla from Hidalgo’s Pastrana vineyard near Sanlucar. Pasada means ‘aged’; the wines for the final blend were kept for many years in a ‘solera’ system of old American oak casks. Still lively and bright with salty lemon, there are also toasty rich notes and a long finish. Sip it cold with olives and Manchego cheese.

Silver medal, 92/100. Rather stylish with an apple peel and nutty nose. Rich complex notes of dried fruit and salted nuts. Long, floral finish.

Intense nose, with flavours of almonds and orange peel and a long, satisfying finish, showing its great quality. Pair with a fish pie, seafood pasta, smoked mackerel and other flavoursome dishes, or as a delicious aperitif.

As soon as summer arrives, a bottle of this goes straight in my fridge. An aged single vineyard Manzanilla sherry from one of the finest of all producers, it’s about as fine a mid-morning palate cleanser as you’ll find. Bone dry and full of dried olives, nuts and wild herbs followed by a long, salty finish, it’ll have you gasping for more.

Bready and pungent. Bone dry and really appetising. Extra depth compared with a regular Manzanilla. Very good value.
