I Vigneri Rosso 2023
A beautiful, energetic and elegant medium-bodied red from the north of Etna, traditionally made from a blend of 90% nerello mascalese and 10% nerello cappuccio. Pure, precise red cherry and raspberry fruit with a stony mineral core and a fragrant, almost peppery-spice note on the refreshing finish. Aged in amphora under the winery, the tannins have a textural, tactile feel and this is even more gorgeous when given a few hours in a decanter. Known locally and now in the wider wine world as something of a old-vine guru, winegrower Salvo Foti was instrumental in putting Etna on the fine wine map while he was working for the Benanti family, before setting up I Vigneri. Here, vineyard work is all done by hand with natural products, winemaking is carried out in the Palmento - the traditional winery building of Mount Etna - without refrigeration equipment and without ageing in wood, and bottling happens according to the phases of the moon.
