Château Rouquette Sur Mer

Château Rouquette Sur Mer has been family-owned for four generations, and is currently headed by Jacques Boscary, along with his wife Dominique, and his sons François and Arnaud.

The property is located at La Clape – a coastal sub-zone of the Languedoc region that gets its name from the Occitan term clapas, meaning ‘pile of stone’. It really is as close to the sea as its château name suggests: the Boscarys’ 50ha of stunning, untamed vineyards, interspersed with trees and wild flowers, are on the cliffs of the striking Massif de la Clape, facing south out towards the sea.

The resulting cool, maritime summer breezes help the grapes to ripen at a slow and steady pace. The family plants a number of varieties, all of which are ideally suited to the Languedoc climate and terroir; they include syrah, mourvèdre, grenache, and carignan for the reds, and bourboulenc and roussanne for the whites. The soils are equally varied to match, ranging from clay and limestone to marl and brown crushed limestone.

The château works hard to preserve its breathtaking natural surroundings, limiting the use of pesticides and opting for gentler alternatives where possible, such as using animal manure and harvesting all of the grapes by hand.

In the cellar, the family has kept up-to-date with modern technology, making use of temperature-controlled facilities, a pneumatic press and air-conditioned cellars.
