London - 150th Masterclass - Dirceu Vianna Jr MW History of Portugal - Sat Day
Due to illness, this masterclass will now be hosted by Dirceu Vianna Junior MW
Join our buyer for Portugal, Jo Locke MW, on Saturday daytime as she takes members through the history (and future!) of Portuguese wine.
You must also purchase a ticket to the Anniversary Exhibition Walkaround to attend this event.
In 1874, a group of Portuguese Growers shipped their wines to London for an International Exhibition but unfortunately, hidden deep in the cellars, the wines were overlooked. To avoid a diplomatic outcry, Royal Albert Hall architect, Major-General Henry Scott and R. Brudenell Carter, a renowned ophthalmic surgeon, were tasked with ensuring the wine went to good homes (and cellars). And thus, through a series of lunches, began the The International Exhibition Co-operative Wine Society Limited, now referred to your The Wine Society.
In this special tasting masterclass hosted by our very own buyer for Portugal, Jo Locke MW, we explore the past 150 years of Portugues wines, its heritage and its development, the changes and the innovations.
Jo will select six wines to tell the story of this ground-breaking and underappreciated wine producing country and share with Members her experiences of buying these wines and what shes sees for their future.
The wines for this tasting are;
1. Filipa Pato 3B Rosé Extra Bruto
2. Coelheiros Branco, Alentejo 2022
3. Anselmo Mendes Contacto Alvarinho, Vinho Verde 2022
4. Quinta do Ataíde Vinha do Arco Bloco 63, Douro 2008
5. Falésia Wines Infante da Falésia Premium, Algarve 2020
6. Henriques and Henriques Bual, 15 Years Old
7. The Society's 150th Anniversary Vintage Port 2011
8. Graham's Single Harvest Tawny Colheita 2011
Please remember that you must also have a ticket to our Anniversary Exhibition Walkaround on the Saturday Daytime to attend this tasting.
Our Masterclasses during our Exhibition Weekends are the perfect way to dive deeper into some of the most interesting topics of wine - past, present and future.
Given that they are hosted during the walkaround events, and within the same building, it is essential that members purchase the ticket to attend the relevant walkaround in addition to their masterclass.
If you are unsure about whether you have booked the correct tickets, please do not hesitate to contact tastings@thewinesociety.com
Members who attend our 150th anniversary events will be entitled to our usual 10% tastings discount on most available wines shown. Our limited edition wines, however, are in short supply and we will therefore not be able to offer the discount on all wines.
