Mateus Nicolau de Almeida 'Mater-Dôme' Tinto, Douro 2007

2.000000000 star rating 1 Reviews
This Portuguese red offers a lovely nose, still fresh and sweet fruited but with notes of mellow mature savouriness and a touch of biscuit and raspberry preserve. The palate is silky, with vibrant acidity but nicely mellow tannins. A good combination of sweet fruit and savoury secondary flavours support plush pillowy apricot, strawberry, raspberry, and bramble fruit, a hint of balsamic, and note of mocha, earthiness and a mineral freshness with wild strawberries through to the finish. Mateus is the fifth generation of the Nicolau de Almeida family to produce wine in the Douro. Together with his wife, Teresa Ameztoy, they work in a wine cellar they call Shad’s Winery (Alosa Alosa), named after the fish that crossed the Atlantic to swim up the Douro River, a reality impossible today due to the construction of dams. The Mater-Dôme project shines a spotlight on the Mêda area of the Douro, once very popular in the restaurants of Porto. It’s a region that has more commonly been blended into wider Douro Superior wines in recent years. Stylistically it captures the best of the Douro and Dão and, with altitudes of up to 700 metres, the climate is that bit cooler and wetter than the rest of the Douro, making it perfect for slightly lighter and fresher wines.
