From a small north-east-facing vineyard planted in 1966 on Kimmeridgian marl bedrock with limestone and flint topsoil, comes a wines delivering power, finesses and freshness with great structure and concentration. This was the first of Pellé`s single-vineyard wines to be produced in 1981 and the 2022 shows rich, ripe grapefruit characteristics and saline minerality. A serious white for the dinner table.

Domaine Henry Pellé

Domaine Pellé, the largest in the Menetou-Salon appellation, is situated on the outskirts of Morogues, a small village to the west of Sancerre. The domaine’s history only dates back as far as 1959, about the same time as the appellation itself was created, although records show the Pellé family was making wine in the Loire region long before that. The current owner is Anne Pellé, widow of the founder’s son Eric, who now runs the estate along with her own son Paul-Henry and some outside help from consultant oenologist Julien Zernott. This relatively small team produce around one-quarter of all the wines of Menetou-Salon.

There are about 40 hectares of vines in total planted on limestone-clay soils, which are rich in marine fossils, similar to those found in Sancerre. Two-thirds of plantings are sauvignon blanc, the remainder pinot noir. The estate practices sustainable methods in the vineyards and very gentle pressing of the grapes in the winery. This is a domaine better-known for its white wines than its reds and its sauvignons compare favourably with those of neighbouring Sancerre in terms of quality and complexity. The domaine style is vibrant, lively and full of rich flavours, making these are charming wines worthy of even more recognition in their own right.
