Muratie Wine Estate
One of the oldest and most visited estates in the Cape, Muratie is steeped in history and character. Today Rijk Melck runs the property, whose history goes back to 1685, and the many artefacts (and impressive cobwebs) are a reflection of times past.
Today this is a must-stop destination for its wines too (and there is a tasting room and restaurant, and more recently an art gallery in the lovely old homestead on site), a wide range named after figures who have influenced the world of wine in South Africa.
The estate was the first to produce pinot noir in the Cape, originally from a vineyard above its neighbour Delheim's property, and since planted in a cooler site. It was established by one Laurens Campher, a German, whose name is given to the Cape White Blend. Rijk's father bought the farm in 1987, when Rijk was working as a doctor in the UK, but work experience in Burgundy inspired his return.
