New Year WWF Worldwide Wonders Mixed
Wines included
Concha y Toro Corte Lorena San Fernando Syrah-Mourvèdre 2022
This wine comes from a coolish spot for these varieties and they offer deep, rich flavours yet maintain an intense aromatic complexity on the nose and a freshness on the palate. This is a blend of 77.5% syrah, which has a deep, ripe black-fruit character, with 22.5% mourvèdre which contributes spicy notes and structure. Matured for seven months in oak barrels to round out the wine. Concha y Toro are a leader in more sustainable working practices with strategies to reduce energy and water use, environmental projects including increasing biodiversity, and many local community initiatives.
The Society's Falanghina 2023
Falanghina is one of Italy's many native grape varieties that we feel shouldn't be left under the radar! With tangy nectarine and tangerine flavours, this is a lovely crisp, dry and expressive wine to add to your selection. Falanghina (pronounced fa-lang-GEE-na) is Campania's oldest grape, named after 'phalanx', a Roman troop formation, and offers delicious tangy freshness and citrus fruit. This one is made for The Wine Society by La Guardiense, an important co-operative located in the mountainous Benevento region. The broom and cauldron on the label are inspired in part by the Witches of Benevento, who, ancient legend has it, gathered under a walnut tree in the town, while the name of the producer, Janare, means witch in the local dialect.
Picpoul de Pinet, Domaine Félines Jourdan 2023
One of the best-value whites from the south of France. Full-flavoured and dry, yet with crisp freshness and a beguiling citrus and herb flavour. The 2023 has a lovely sense of balance with weight of fruit as well as grip.
Touraine Sauvignon Blanc, Domaine Guénault 2023
From the Bougrier family's own property, where the chalk soils imbue a classical Loire minerality to the wine, making it a great alternative to Central Vineyards sauvignons.
Our Fathers 'There is a Light' McLaren Vale Shiraz-Grenache 2023
Full-bodied, punchy and generous blend of shiraz and grenache, which is vibrant and polished on the nose, with black fruit, pepperiness, black olive tapenade. The palate is spicy, with blackcurrant, blueberry, full tannins and a fair bit of heft towards the end. This is a lot of wine at the price. Our Fathers is a project set-up by highly respected winemaker Giles Cooke MW and all profits are donated to charity, with a focus on mental health charities in the UK and Australia.
Clay Creek Vineyards California Chardonnay 2023
With most of the fruit for this chardonnay coming from the cooler Clarksburg AVA in the Sacramento Delta, just east of San Francisco Bay, this has lovely freshness. Peach, pineapple and mango flavours are well balanced by generous vanilla oak on this great anyday chardonnay.
Rata Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2024
Made by James Macdonald, winemaker at the iconic Marlborough winery, Hunter's, this is fresh and zesty with mouthwatering pineapple and lime-peel aromas. A consistently popular wine which is irresistibly refreshing.
Beaujolais-Villages Vieilles Vignes, Château d'Emeringes 2023
Bags of vibrant, fresh gamay fruit from an excellent producer with vines close to Juliénas. Refreshing and versatile estate-bottled Beaujolais. Emeringes is a village perched above Juliénas and its vines, often laid out on steep slopes, offer a good source of Villages-quality Beaujolais. The château itself is at the top of the village, next to the church where Pierre David uses the cellars to make his wines.
Ponte da Boga P Mencía, Ribeira Sacra 2023
A perfumed, peppery and fruit-forward red with all the hallmarks of the mencía grape, crunchy sour cherry and blackcurrant mingle with floral and spicy notes of violet and black liquorice. This is a decidedly fresh and vibrant red and would certainly appeal to lovers of pinot noir, grenache or gamay.
Qvinto Arrio Tempranillo Blanco, Rioja 2023
An unusual grape variety for white Rioja, tempranillo blanco is a mutation of it's better known red counterpart. Here it delivers a wine that is refreshing and tangy with notable tropical nectarine and mango notes on the nose and palate with a crisp, dry finish.
Val de Loire Malbec, Domaine des Rochelles, J. Lebreton 2022
The Lebretons are better known for their cellar-worthy Anjou cabernets but have been making this light, modern style of malbec - here known as côt - since 2014. It is delicately fragrant, fresh, and light-footed on the palate.
Santa Tresa Rina Russa Frappato, Terre Siciliana 2023
Frappato can be seen as Sicily's answer to Beaujolais. Pale in colour and juicy in character, this is bursting with tangy cranberry, redcurrant, and wild-strawberry fruit. Light-to-medium bodied with gentle tannins, it makes a satisfyingly good match with spicy dishes thanks to its naturally sweet red-berry profile.
