Nothern Italy Trio
Wines included
Barolo Terlo Vigna Costa Grimaldi, Luigi Einaudi 2017
This lovely Barolo comes from a site close to the town of Barolo in the heart of the region. The 2017 is especially expressive, with aromas of dried orange peel, morello cherry and tea. Stylish, silky, firm tannins and excellent balance. The Terlo cru lies just to the west of the village Of Barolo itself, Einaudi made 9,000 bottles of this cru within a cru, exclusively from their own grapes. It spends 30 months in barrel
Soave Classico Calvarino, Pieropan 2018
Always the most linear of Pieropan’s pair of single-vineyard Soave Classicos, the 2018 vintage is racy and vivid, pulsing with lemony freshness, a spicy bay-leaf edge and tangy orange finish. Bottle age is bringing nutty complexity, though is still youthful. Calvarino, aka ‘Little Calvary`, so named because of the steepness of the slope and the hard work it involves, has basalt soil which gives this fine Italian white wine its minerality and finesse.
Amarone della Valpolicella Corte Giara, Allegrini 2021
Full-bodied, intense yet elegant wine packed with ripe blackberry, liquorice, and dried tobacco leaf. This comes from a stunning Valpolicella vineyard purchased by Allegrini in 1979 on a great site overlooking Lake Garda. Delicious paired with rich foods, it really opens up if decanted an hour or so before being enjoyed.
