Oak Valley Groenlandberg Chardonnay, Elgin 2020
A regular on the Platter podium, this is wonderfully consistent cool-climate barrel-fermented chardonnay of real class. Wonderful acidity lifts, freshens and lengthens the palate. Platter’s South African Wine Guide tells you all you need to know about South African wine, and the 2022 edition says of this wine: 'Fabulous citrus concentration, mineral vitality and subtle oatmeal, hazelnut and orange-peel nuances after nine months in 300l barriques'.

Oak Valley Estate
This beautiful estate has a long history dating back to 1898 and is now owned by the fifth generation of the Viljoen family. Situated on the northern side of the Elgin mountain basin, its 1786 hectares boast stunning views with rugged mountains complemented by undulating landscapes which are home to fruit trees (they are recently the first to develop a pure red apple), flowers, cattle, acorn fed pork, and of course to vines (now 30ha, alongside around 400ha of other fruits).
Long-term grape grower and supplier to the great and the good of the industry (previously up to 50% of production), Oak Valley only bottled its own wine from 2003. The focus is now firmly on chardonnay and pinot noir, with more chardonnay planted in 2017 and a new cellar designed and built accordingly, and taking advantage of the existing cooling facility used in flower production.
Oak Valley has an admirable record for sustainability and holds BWI Champion status and is IPW and Wieta accredited. It offers walking/hiking and mountain bike trails which have hosted the infamous Cape Epic, as well as a restaurant, deli and tasting room on site.
