Online - Syrah in the Spotlight
Syrah, also known as shiraz, is one of the world’s most esteemed noble black grape varieties, renowned for crafting silky, full-bodied, and age-worthy wines. Originating in the Rhône Valley, this versatile grape has spread to over 30 countries, including Australia, South Africa and Morocco.
Join us as we delve into the rich history, exciting present, and promising future of this remarkable grape.
The Tastings Team will be exploring its unique qualities through a tasting of four wines that showcase the character of this celebrated variety. These wines are detailed below should you wish to taste along with us.
Syrah’s origins lie in France’s Rhône Valley. In its northern appellations single-variety syrah can range from soft and fruit-forward to deep, tannic and powerful. The Southern Rhône is where you'll find syrah featured in blends with a range of other local grape varieties, such as grenache, mourvedre, cinsault and carignan.
Further afield, whether known as syrah or shiraz, we continue to find single varietal styles from lighter, red wines to rich, almost chocolatey expressions as well as blends featuring a plethora of co-stars including cabernet sauvignon and pinotage.
