Parker Estate
Established by John and Faye Parker in the mid-1980s, Parker Estate quickly garnered a reputation for making exceptional cabernet sauvignon-based wines on Coonawarra’s famous red soils called terra rossa. The Parker’s put in a lot of effort, no little finacial investment, and some time to seek out what they and their good friend, winemaker Doug Balnaves, considered the best plots around. They settled on land just north of a small township called Penola and planted their first vines there in 1985, using the Reynella selection of cabernet cuttings that had originally come from pre-phylloxera Bordeaux. In 1998 they released their first wine, named accurately and perhaps confidently ‘First Growth’, and it was an immediate success. Ensuing vintages emulated it in popularity with both the public and on the awards circuit. In 2013 the Hesketh family took over the running of the estate with a philosophy of maintaining the excellence that the Parkers had achieved while not resting on any laurels.
