Pepe Mendoza Mares de Luz Monastrell-Giró, Alicante 2021

3.272727300 star rating 11 Reviews
A fruity and peppery southern Spanish red from vineyards in Alicante, where Pepe Mendoza's family vineyard and his winemaking talent are pushing boundaries in Spain. The monastrell grape endows a blackberry richness and peppery notes backed by the succulence of giró (the local name for garnacha).

Pepe Mendoza

Based in Alicante, Pepe Mendoza was born into Spanish-wine royalty (his father Enrique helms one of the most successful family wineries in the country) and crafts wines of purity, depth and elegance. His style is a rejection of the high-volume, low-character methods of the bigger conglomerates and the resultant high-alcohol blockbusters, instead focusing on a more terroir-focused approach. The results are very impressive. He works only with native grapes (monastrell, alicante bouschet, muscatel, macabeo and the very rare giro are all grown) and employs native yeasts for fermentation, and he takes a hands off approach to winemaking, intervening as little as possible in the process to create wines that very much speak of their origins.

Winemaker Pepe Mendoza works only with native grapes, has a focus on terroir and adopts a minimal intervention approach to winemaking. This 50/50 blend of monastrell and giro (aka garnacha) from southern Spain offers easy-drinking blackberry and dark fruit flavours with a light touch. Fresh and fruity, and excellent value at just under a tenner.
