Quinta de la Rosa Tinta Cão, Douro 2021
Quinta de la Rosa's table wines are remarkable and this example of an ancient and low-yielding local grape, tinta cão, stopped buyer Freddy Bulmer in his tracks for its wonderful aromas. Quinta de la Rosa have unlocked the grape's elegance and finesse by using only a little contact, to draw out the vibrant purple colour but not over-cook the tannins. The result is a more aromatic wine, with lifted notes of violets, bramble fruits, redcurrants and lavender on the nose. The palate still has plenty of depth and concentration and it has a lovely freshness of acidity which keeps it lifted and a joy to drink. Flavours of blueberry fruits, damsons, sloes, plums and wild raspberries build and are complimented by a delicately savoury umami which compliments the succulent fruit. Winemaker Jorge is particularly pleased with the 2021 vintage as it was hot enough to achieve optimal ripeness without producing heavy wines.
