Reyneke Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Stellenbosch 2019
Certified organic and biodynamic, this is only the fourth release of this refined cabernet. Berry and spiced plum fruit and a hint of more classic tobacco enjoy wonderful freshness and even a saline note, with finely wrought tannins in support. Platter's 5* 2023: 'Effortless ease to 19 (95), only the 4th ever bottling, improves on last 17 ...(94). Complex floral scents to layered macerated plum & berry fruit, suave & engaging. Oak, all old, 22 months, in sync. Velvety & cohesive, the mere 183 cases will age beautifully'. Reyneke were so persuasive we have agreed to fund two projects through our 2024 Climate & Nature programme. One to support mulching to help preserve a block of old-vine chenin blanc, the second is simply to sponsor a parcel of Reyneke’s land to be rewilded with endemic plant species.

Reyneke Wines
Reyneke is an old Stellenbosch property which was established in 1863 but did not bottle its own wine until 1998. Until recently it was wholly owned by the Reyneke family, and current generation biodynamic and surfing specialist Johan Reyneke continues to farm the vineyards.
The property is now in the same stable as Boekenhoutskloof and one of the latter’s former winemaking team, Rudiger Gretschel, has taken the wines to a new level of quality as Cellarmaster, including their first five-star wine in the influential Platter’s Guide 2011, while respecting the environmentally sound philosophies that Johan Reyneke holds so dear.
The estate is a member of South Africa’s Biodiversity in Wine Initiative, WIETA accredited, and makes all its own compost and biodynamic preparations on site. A wide range of grape varieties are planted, including mourvèdre, pinotage, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc, with chenin blanc and sauvignon blanc for the whites.

A wine that reminds me of none other than the stellar 2013 vintage of the very same wine, to which I awarded a perfect 20/20!
