Bodega Txakoli Rezabal

Husband and wife Mireya & Anders Rezabal founded this estate in their native Basque Country, on the coast of northern Spain, in 1996. The couple has 15 hectares of traditionally high-trained vines, planted on slopes which are cooled by breezes from the Cantabrian sea.

The estate is to the east of Guetaria, a village on the fringes of the coastal town of Zarautz, in a tiny DO called Getariako Txakolina (or Chacolí de Guetaria in Spanish). Txakoli, the wine the family produces, first received DO status here in 1989, but has since attained DO status in two other areas: Chacolí de Vizcaya, further west, in 1994 and Chacolí de Álava, further inland, in 2001.

Unlike many examples of this style, which can be very neutral in character, this one is incredibly expressive, super lively and fresh with a juicy and crisp lemon zestiness, and a slight pepperiness. Really wakes you up! Perfect if you want a light and crisp white to accompany shellfish.

From the Basque country on the other side of the Pyrenees, Txacoli (pronounced cha-koh-li) is similarly peppy. Made mostly from the hondarrabi zuri grape, it is typically crisp and very lively with a sense of salty minerals, like Badoit. A good wine, in short, for a hot day. An excellent example is Rezabal Txacoli Getariako Txakolina 2022, Spain (11.5%, The Wine Society , £12.50). ‘Txacoli doesn't have the awareness [of some other Iberian wines], but it does have a following. If we run out I get lots of emails asking where it is,' says Wine Society head buyer Pierre Mansour.

Stony, dry, lemony. Lots of tension and freshness and a very good example of this appellation – I have tasted others at this price that are far more dilute. Not this one. There’s a pepperiness in the texture, like a prickle but not fizzy. So fresh and with good length for the price. Good value.
