Ribeiro Santo Bastardo, Dão 2022
Ribeiro Santo grow their bastardo in the Dão region in north-central Portugal, on the granitic soils of the mountainous landscape, before fermenting 50% on stems and maturing in used oak barrels for 12 months. The resulting wine is medium bodied with real generosity of deep, brooding baked plum, blackberry, wild strawberry, cloves, sweet oak smoke and black peppercorns. The palate is full but silky and rounded, with mellow fruit on the mid palate, blueberry pie, sweet spice and notes of violets. Plush, mellow and perfect for slow-cooked tomato and beef ragu, mushroom risotto or a grilled vegetable tart. Bastardo is another name for the trousseau grape variety, which originates in Eastern France and is now planted in many parts of Western Europe. In Portugal its most commonly planted for its use in Port production, though some winemakers have realised the potential that the variety has to make delicious red wines. While its perhaps most well known for its use in the trendy wines of Jura, when its made is per this example, it offers plenty of style and good value, too.
