Riverlore
The Rose family are pioneers of making wine in New Zealand’s Wairau Valley sub-region, having set up their vineyards in 1978.
Phil and Chris Rose, the founders of the Wairau River Wines estate, work with their children (son Sam is the winemaker), using only estate fruit for the estate wines and working by hand to achieve low yields and properly ripe fruit.
Their 200 hectares embrace five individual vineyard sites, each with its own characteristics, where they have planted sauvignon blanc, pinot gris and pinot noir.
For the Riverlore wine some of the fruit is brought in from growers they trust and added to grapes from their own vines, and all the fruit is brought to a state-of-the-art winery at the Wairau River Wines estate where Sam, a Lincoln University graduate, makes wines noted for their fruit intensity and fragrance.
