Royal Tunbridge Wells - South America growers - Walkaround tasting
There’s more to South America’s wines than the bold malbecs and cabernet sauvignon from Argentina, taut Chilean chardonnays and ripely textured tannat from Uruguay, but it’s a good place to start! This tasting will feature those and more South American gems, with our producers on hand to help you explore.
Separated by the Andes (the longest continental mountain range in the world) but joined by their producing of delicious wine, Chile and Argentina share in being firm favourite regions amongst Society members. Moving east of Argentina, and up in popularity and following with members, is Uruguay. Together, the three countries have wines of quality and variety in abundance.
Altitude is key for quality in Argentina with the higher vineyard sites producing refined wines, but that’s not to ignore the value that can also be found in the country. Old-vines, particularly for malbec, also play a significant role in the story of Argentinian wine.
For Chile, there is plenty of variance from the climatic conditions and the differences in soil, and you can find classy, cool-climate sauvignon blanc and pinot noir from the coastal regions as well as higher yields from the more fertile, productive and warm Central Valley.
Where Argentina and Chile have altitude and climate, Uruguay has weather! It gets considerably more rain, but happily the tannat grape which is the most-planted variety in Uruguay and originally brought by the Basques from south-west France, thrives in the moderate Atlantic-influenced climate. Expect freshness and character and increasing sophistication.
Join us, our producers, and Buyer Toby Morrhall in exploring and enjoying South American wines.
