Proyecto Garnachas de España
This fascinating initiative is the brainchild of winemaker Raul Acha, who makes wine in several regions across Spain. He lives in Rioja where his family has grown grapes for several generations and his father's ancient garnacha vineyard inspired Raul to search different vineyards across Spain that he feels best reflect the noble features of this variety. His research identified Calatayud, Moncayo and Rioja in the north, and Priorat by the Mediterranean.
He believes that garnacha, like pinot noir, reflects the natural features of its site (climate, soil, aspect) and so his winemaking approach is sensitive so as not to mask these individual nuances. The Society currently lists Moncayo which represents the fresh, juicy and wonderfully fruity character of garnacha grown at high altitude.
