Sancerre ‘Les Chailloux', François et Jean-Marie Cherrier 2018

There may be a new label for this Loire sauvignon blanc, but it is in very much in the same flinty fresh style, and this wine is given longer on its fine lees to bring more flavour and complexity.

François et Jean-Marie Cherrier

François and Jean-Marie Cherrier work with father Pierre at this Sancerre estate which was established by Maurice Cherrier in 1927. Over the years the family have accumulated 14 hectares of vineyards underpinned by classic silex and chalk soils.

Several green harvests to lower the number of bunches on the vine lead to low yields, and hand harvesting ensures that only the best fruit is picked. In the winery vinification takes place in stainless steel and the wines see no oak before release.

Loire Valley Vintage 2018 Sancerre, Pouilly

If 2017 was classic (in a good way), with consistent purity of fruit and glorious freshness to the fore, 2018 is by contrast a riper and – for many – friendlier vintage, with super-healthy fruit, richer flavours and less of the acidity which some can struggle with.
