Saumur-Champigny Tradition Clos des Cordeliers, Domaine Ratron 2018

Red Wine from France - Loire
4.500000000 star rating 4 Reviews
A healthy ripe vintage, this cabernet franc has dark but fresh fruit and appetising lift on the palate. This Loire red is made without oak to better respect the quality and integrity of the cabernet franc grape - the only variety grown on the estate and the only variety allowed for the appellation.

Domaine Ratron

Since 1932 this Loire estate has belonged to the Ratron family. It was with great sadness that we learned in March 2017 of the sudden illness and death of Sébastien Ratron, a kind and gentle man who was the fourth generation to continue the tradition of winemaking here. Today it is his charming wife Marie-Françoise who is at the helm.

The Clos des Cordeliers estate is in the commune of Souzay-Champigny, in the heart of the Saumur-Champigny appellation, and takes its name from Franciscan monks known as ‘Cordeliers’ who resided here along with their vines between 1696 and the French Revolution in 1789.

No oak is used in the winemaking process, allowing the natural fragrance and freshness of cabernet franc, the only grape planted at the estate, to shine through. It is an excellent expression of this Loire valley classic and makes a surprisingly good red wine match for goat’s milk cheeses, with the Prestige cuvée more appropriate for meat dishes, especially lamb and young beef which it complements beautifully. The Ratrons have always kept a beautiful vineyard and a welcoming tasting room.

Loire Valley Vintage 2018 Anjou Touraine

If 2017 was classic (in a good way), with consistent purity of fruit and glorious freshness to the fore, 2018 is by contrast a riper and – for many – friendlier vintage, with super-healthy fruit, richer flavours and less of the acidity which some can struggle with.

The Buyer

… dense and velvety, a perfect food wine with lots of character.
