Domaine Ratron
Since 1932 this Loire estate has belonged to the Ratron family. It was with great sadness that we learned in March 2017 of the sudden illness and death of Sébastien Ratron, a kind and gentle man who was the fourth generation to continue the tradition of winemaking here. Today it is his charming wife Marie-Françoise who is at the helm.
The Clos des Cordeliers estate is in the commune of Souzay-Champigny, in the heart of the Saumur-Champigny appellation, and takes its name from Franciscan monks known as ‘Cordeliers’ who resided here along with their vines between 1696 and the French Revolution in 1789.
No oak is used in the winemaking process, allowing the natural fragrance and freshness of cabernet franc, the only grape planted at the estate, to shine through. It is an excellent expression of this Loire valley classic and makes a surprisingly good red wine match for goat’s milk cheeses, with the Prestige cuvée more appropriate for meat dishes, especially lamb and young beef which it complements beautifully. The Ratrons have always kept a beautiful vineyard and a welcoming tasting room.
The Times
The Loire’s cabernet franc is a whizz served cool and this glorious, fresh, fragrant violet and Victoria plum packed, unoaked Domaine Ratron edition is one of this summer’s stars
