Sebastian Payne MW’s Champion picks
Winemaker Chester Osborn has taken this Rhône variety and delivered a ‘full-throttle’ Aussie wine with ‘incredible lift and driven aromas’ of lemon and toast, along with elderflower and apple. Utterly invigorating, and a wine with plenty of personality – just like the person who makes it. To cap it all, it's been voted a Wine Champion from our extensive blind tastings in 2022.
A classy performer from Argentina that impressed our Wine Champions tasters with its turbo-charged palate of dark-berry fruit, plums, supple tannins and sweet spice. Just under a year in barrel has softened the palate beautifully.
Our Wine Champions tasting panel were unanimous in their approval for this aromatic stone-fruited chardonnay from Chile. The panel loved its personality, crisp acidity, subtle smoky note and touch of oak which adds richness.
Plenty of praise from the 2022 Wine Champions tasting panel here: ‘very moreish’, ‘bursting with personality’, ‘yum!’. Lovely notes of stone fruit, ripe peach and refreshing citrus aromas. ‘Fiano is a grape with class,’ declared Sebastian Payne MW.
This members’ favourite claret won through again to become a Wine Champion this year, impressing the tasting panel with its fresh, balanced aromas of cedarwood and berry fruit, good concentration and a well-balanced finish.
Our tasters loved the generosity of fruit and the depth of flavour of this Italian dolcetto, which is packed with wild-strawberry and red-cherry notes. So much so that they voted it a 2022 Wine Champion. Freddy Bulmer praised its elegance and succulent palate. The ideal pizza wine.
