Viña Mayor

Viña Mayor was created in 1986 and is situated in Quintanilla De Onésimo, where vineyards are found on the famous ‘Golden Mile’, the most prestigious and sought-after zone in Ribera del Duero, and just a stone’s throw from the iconic Vega Sicilia estate. The winery effortlessly combines tradition with innovation, an ethos spearheaded by the visionary Technical Director, Almudena Alberca MW, the celebrated first Spanish female Master of Wine.

Environmental sustainability
Viña Mayor are also the first winery in Ribera del Duero to obtain 'Wineries for Climate Protection' certification while developing an ambitious project of regenerative viticulture alongside a biodiversity plan to recover and protect local flora and fauna.

As part of gaining this certification, Viña Mayor has reduced emissions by 19%. 100% of the electricity they use is from certified renewable sources, which has led to a 450-tonne reduction in their CO2 emissions. In an area where water scarcity is a major challenge, they have moved to lower planting densities to reduce the need for water, improved our pruning to make the vine more resilient and changed to drought-resistant rootstocks. 10 hectares of their vineyards have been certified as organic since 2012, and another 12 hectares gained organic certification in 2022.

They have also shifted to the use of sustainable wood in the vineyard: they have increased by 50% the contracting of suppliers that use FSC...

Decanter

Bright and lifted: cherry and raspberry, dark plum. Succulent, and an almost airy palate with incisive acidity and fine, grippy tannin. An elegant take.

Decanter

A very fresh and elegant example of Ribera. Aromas of redcurrant, tannins well managed, ripe and soft. Crisp and lively finish, great energy.

Dark crimson. Polished. Just a tad too well mannered to stand out from the crowd.
