Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Cap Classique Brut 2023

5.000000000 star rating 1 Reviews
‘It tastes like Champagne’ was the resounding verdict of this under-£15 South African Cap Classique, made by the creators of the style, Simonsig. The traditional Champagne varieties of chardonnay and pinots noir and meunier combine to make a rich, toasty traditional-method sparkling with impressive weight for the price and it was rightly judged to be a Wine Champion.

Simonsig Wine Estate

Simonsig is one of the most respected producers in the Cape wine industry, established in the 1950s just outside Stellenbosch. It is owned and run by the Malan family and winemaking is overseen by Johan and his son Michael.

Their wide range is perhaps best known for two wines: their highly regarded red Cape Blend, which pays tribute to Frans Malan, visionary patriarch and founder of Simonsig; and Kaapse Vonkel, the first South African sparkling wine made according to the traditional method, known in South Africa as Méthode Cap Classique, back in 1971 and therefore celebrating its - and the appellation's - 50th anniversary in 2021.
